It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Dr. John Hyson, Jr., Class of 1950.

Dr. Hyson, Jr. was the former Director of Archives and History at the National Museum of Dentistry. He also wrote extensively about the history of the Dental School. The son of a dentist and homemaker, he was born and raised in Baltimore. After graduating from Loyola High School in 1945, he attended Loyola College for a year before transferring to the University of Maryland Dental School.

After receiving his DDS degree in 1950, he later earned a master’s degree in Oral Surgery from the Dental School. During the mid 1950’s, Dr. Hyson, Jr. was an instructor in oral surgery and operative dentistry at the University of Maryland Dental School. Dr. Hyson, Jr. was an active member of the visiting dental staff at Maryland General Hospital, now the University of Maryland Medical Center. In 1999, he earned a master’s degree in Museum Studies from the University of Delaware.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Elayne, his son, Dr. John Hyson, III, Class of 1979, and their family.

Dental School Mourns the Loss of Dr. Harry W.F. Dressel, Jr.

harrydressel2

The Dental School family is sad to inform the community that Dr. Harry Dressel, Class of 1945, passed away on August 18, 2009.  Dr. Dressel was an unwavering supporter and friend of the Dental School.  While Dr. Dressel enjoyed 25 years in private practice, he also taught extensively.  He was an honored faculty member in Operative Dentistry at the University of Maryland Dental School, as well as the Community College of Baltimore.  During his 16 years at the Community College, Dr. Dressel established the Department of Dental Auxiliaries and was later elected their first Professor Emeritus.  Dr. Dressel also served on many American Dental Association committees and was the only individual to serve twice as president of the Dental School Alumni Association.  In 1994, he received the BCDS Distinguished Alumnus Award and Hall of Fame Citation.

Born in Southwest Baltimore City, Dr. Dressel learned to be an innovator from his father, who worked as an efficiency manager at Westinghouse, Inc.  A lifelong learner, Dr. Dressel took up new hobbies in his later years, including dancing, photography and Spanish.

Dr. Dressel was a great financial supporter of the Dental School.  He understood and appreciated the importance of dental education.  By giving back, he enabled others to enjoy the same opportunities that he had while in school.  He wanted to be remembered for his efforts to improve the lives of dental school students.  As one former student said, “he was like a father figure with advice even outside of dentistry.  He devoted his life to his profession [and] family.”

Dr. Dressel will be greatly missed by the Dental School community. If you would like to share your own story or thoughts on Dr. Harry Dressel, please e-mail us or submit your comments by clicking on Comments below.

Dental School Pays Tribute to Dr. Joseph Cappuccio

In 1951, Dr. Cappuccio became a board-qualified oral surgeon and taught generations of dental students at Maryland from 1948 to his retirement. In addition to his roles as a teacher and dentist, Dr. Cappuccio was extremely active as a volunteer. A past president of the American Dental Association (ADA), he was the fourth district trustee, member of the ADA House of Delegates for 18 years, and a member of the ADA Council on Dental Relief. He served as a director and member of the executive committee of the American Fund for Dental Health and was director of the American Dental Political Action Committee.

Dr. Cappuccio was also very active in the Dental School, serving as past president of our Alumni Association among other roles. In total, he held 83 offices in his career and gave close to 100 lectures nationally and internationally.

This month during the 2009 Dental School Commencement, Dr. Cappuccio was honored as the recipient of the Dean’s Special Recognition Award for his tireless commitment to the school and its alumni. Dr. Cappuccio was a giant in the dental community, both in his leadership and passion for serving others. His passing leaves a large void at the Dental School.

We have already received many e-mails from alumni and friends who have shared their personal memories about Joe. Please e-mail us if you would like to share your own story with us on the Cappuccio Blog.
